Welcome

The great thing about technology is that this ezine gets distributed while I'm asleep. Even better than that, it gets released while I'm on vacation, at least I hope that I'll be on vacation when you receive this. As I write this, I have a plan to "kidnap" my husband and whisk him away on a trip with the full approval of his work. Stay tuned for the next ezine, and I'll tell you more.

My favorite PC shortcuts and tips

I've learned a few PC tricks through the years, mostly from others, and it occurs to me that some of you may not be aware of them, and they are such time savers. My favorites are:

  1. Alt Tab: I use this to toggle between the many programs that I have open. This function remembers your most recently used program so you flip back and forth, even between two sessions of the same program. Invaluable!
  2. Desktop Shortcut: Have a favorite program that you use frequently and you want easy access or your desktop? Create a shortcut by right clicking your mouse on your desktop and browsing to the executable file for your favorite program.
  3. Quick Launch Show Desktop Icon: My favorite icon on the task bar, the one that I use the most, is the desktop icon called "show desktop." When I have a lot of programs open and I want to clear everything down to the task bar and have access to the desktop, I just click the desktop icon.

When I received my new computer with Windows XP, the Quick Launch Bar with my favorite icon was not active. To activate it, I right-clicked on the task bar, selected Toolbars, and then Quick Launch.
If you haven't tried this show desktop icon, give it a whirl.

  4. Shortcut Keys: Almost everyone has heard of Ctrl Z for Undo, but do you know and use some of my other favorites such as Ctrl V, X, Y, & C? Here's what they all do and I've listed the associations that I use to remember them, silly, but they work.
    Ctrl Key Result Association
C Copy C is for copy
V Paste V is for victory pasting what you want where you want it
X Cut X is like scissors
Y Redo Y is for why did I undo that?
    Z Undo Z is, well, I just remember Z.

  5. Default Save Locations: It can be a pain saving files to the right place, but there is one way to make it easier. In each of your frequently used Microsoft Programs, you can change the default save location. It's located in a slightly different location in each program, but here's an example for Word. In Word, go to Tools>Options, and select the File Locations tab. Highlight Documents and select Modify. Browse to the folder that you want to be your default saving location.

I hope these tips are helpful.

Logos are fun

A good logo makes a statement about your business. It shows that you are serious about what you do, even in a clever way. I create logos for clients Web sites. If you're interested, please contact me at: kristy@itsvirtuallydone.com

Quick tip: word of the day

If you're like me, you like words. I found a link that you can add to your Web site that contains a word of the day, without advertisements. Here's the link to add "Word of the Day" to your site: http://www.wordthink.com/add-wordthink.html.
