Welcome
I have a passion for backyard birding. I had multiple feeders at our former house, but since we've moved to the new one over a year ago, I've had no feeders up and I've missed the birds. Last weekend that ended when I purchased a bird bath, and with the help of my husband Larry, installed four feeders: two upstairs and two down.

It's always fun to see how long it takes the birds to catch on. What was I thinking trying to attract a tiny hummingbird in winter with a small feeder in the middle of nowhere? Days later the syrup was gone and Holly (I name them) the hummer is a frequent visitor.

What simple delight can your add to your environment?

I always remember an epitaph which is in the cemetery at Tombstone, Arizona. It says: 'Here lies Jack Williams. He done his damnedest.' I think that is the greatest epitaph a man can have - When he gives everything that is in him to do the job he has before him. That is all you can ask of him and that is what I have tried to do.

Say Yes to Your Dreams
What's your dream? Losing 10 pounds? Getting fit? Opening your own business? What keeps you from getting from here to there? Obstacles.

I had lunch with a new VA who had just graduated from VA school. She wanted to start taking on clients part time, but had a long list of reasons why she couldn't do that yet. Obstacles. One by one I and a colleague found reasons for removing the obstacles. I heard from the VA a few days later and she had made great strides toward her goals.

After the lunch, I came home and looked at myself in the mirror. I thought of at least one goal that was stalled. I asked myself, "why am I not moving forward on this project?" Out came the list of obstacles, self-created barriers.

So, if you're like me, you erect an entire course of hurdles that must be overcome before a goal can be started. That keeps the lofty dream out of reach, doesn't it?

Let's take an example: getting fit. Here's a possible obstacle list:

  • Getting a physical exam.
  • Researching athletic clubs.
  • Buying athletic shoes.
  • Buying a new, attractive warm-up suit.
  • Researching and buying a new stereo headset.

So why haven't you started to get fit? "Oh, I need to call my doctor for a physical"…and that becomes the sticking point, the thing you never quite get around to doing. That small matter stops the whole process.

What's the reality though? Can't this person just put on an old pair of sweats and a dirty pair of sneakers and walk a few blocks? Of course! Most of the rest of the obstacles can be done in a few minutes or be treated as rewards for reaching milestones toward the ultimate goal.

We all have dreams big and small. And many of us can't list the reasons why time passes and the dream hasn't become a reality. Consider examining your obstacle list from time to time and I'll do the same.

Quick tip: Save Printer Ink

Going through those ink cartridges faster than you'd like? And they aren't cheap are they? I can't believe it has taken me this long to figure this out, but on my printer, when I select the "fast draft" option, I get a very readable copy that uses a fraction of the ink. Instead of selecting the print icon, I select file>print>properties>fast draft. It will be different on your printer, but it is worth the time to research!
