Welcome
I'm
back from our trip to Hawaii. I'm refreshed, re-energized,
and a lot colder. Don't you always like to have something
to look forward to? I do. I don't like to come home
from one trip before I have the next one planned. You
all know how important it is to get away and get a new
perspective. It doesn't have to be on a plane ride or
be thousands of miles away, just plan a getaway, and
have fun looking forward to it.
Get
excited about something
Are
you tired, run down, listless? Do you poop out at parties?
Instead of taking Vitameatavegamin (think "I Love
Lucy" episode 30, first aired 5/5/1952), try getting
excited about something.
Inspired
by America's Dream Coach, Marcia Wieder, I dared to
do more than just think about my dreams: I articulated
them and acted on them. When she said that dreams don't
have to be big, and they don't have to cost much, I
was freed up to think of small dreams that I could accomplish
easily.
When
I watched the 1998 Winter Olympics, I became intrigued
with the sport of Curling.
| Definition:
A game originating in 16th century Scotland (probably)
in which two four-person teams slide heavy oblate
stones (weighing just over 40 pounds) toward the
center of a circle at either end of a length of
ice. |
I
monitored a local curling club's website (and my bum
shoulder) and waited. The timing became perfect last
week when they moved to an ice rink nearer my home and
had an open house to welcome new members.
It
wasn't what I expected. It was a lot harder than I thought,
requiring balance, flexibility, strength, and finesse.
Boy was it fun, though. I was able to walk (sore muscles)
without pain and the bruise on my knee was fading when
I went to the first draw of the new season. Someone
failed to show and I took his place, and lo and behold,
I'm on a team.
I'm
terrible too. I fall down a lot. I fall down while taking
my turn with the stone and while sweeping to make others'
stones go faster. Getting used to the ice will take
some time, but I'm not discouraged. I had so many people
helping me, rooting for me, and picking me up when I
fell.
Here's
what I get out of learning a new sport:
1. I get a great workout.
2. I'm part of a team all helping each other to succeed.
3. I get out of the house.
4. I'm reducing stress (on the mind anyway).
5. I'm enhancing my listening and learning skills.
6. I'm making new friends.
The
best part is that I don't have to be great at this.
I can just be okay and have lots of fun doing it. I'm
living a dream of wanting to learn what I saw in the
Olympics on TV.
And
most of all: I'm excited about this new thing in my
life. And that carries over to all other aspects of
my life.
So
if your life needs some shaking up, consider learning
something new, a small dream possibly, and watch what
it does for you.
Quick
Tip: Household Inventory System
In
light of all the natural disasters of late, I decided
it was time to get our insurance up-to-date, work on
my will, and to do a household and business inventory.
I went to a big box office supply store and asked for
a household inventory ledger, and the manager didn't
know what I was talking about. (Am I that old, and was
he that young?)
Then
I looked on line, where I should have started. Don't
pay money for software when there is a good free version
available: http://www.knowyourstuff.org/.
Get it free from the Insurance Information Institute
(http://www.iii.org/).
Create
a separate account for your home and business. You add
rooms, items, and can upload digital pictures and scans
of receipts. I added this program and files to the list
of files to be automatically backed up online, so everything
is safely stored in cyberspace. I figure that since
I went to all this trouble, and it does take time, I
probably won't have a loss!
